Argyll Coastal Route Motorhome 3-4 Day Trip Itinerary & Highlights

The Argyll Coastal Route, as the name suggests, is a scenic route that explores the amazing sea views, historical sites, and glorious seafood that the west coast has to offer.

At 129 miles, it is one of the shorter self-drive routes in Scotland, making it a popular choice for travellers who are looking for a brief yet fulfilling road trip to include in their trip!

In this detailed 3–4-day Argyll Coastal Route trip itinerary, we cover the basic details on the route you can take, an overview of the highlights along the way, and more.

Suggested Argyll Coastal Route Trip Itinerary for 3- 4 Days

Day 1

Touched down in Glasgow airport? Start your exciting road trip by conveniently picking up your pre-booked luxury motorhome from Freedom Motorhomes right at the airport.

Already in Scotland? Simply request to pick it up from a location of your choice.

Once you’re all on board, it’s time to head over to the starting point of the Argyll Coastal Route – Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park – barely a short hour drive away.

Depending on your appetite for adventure, you can choose to explore the Trossachs National Park and all the fascinating activities it has to offer (from mountaineering to windsurfing and more) or set up camp at Luss Campsite to enjoy a leisurely day soaking in the natural beauty of Loch Lomond.

Day 2:

Get your day off to a roaring good start by heading to the Falls of Falloch, a stunning waterfall and popular sightseeing attraction where you can have a relaxing breakfast picnic whilst enjoying the views.

Next up? A short and relaxing drive towards the quaint town of Inveraray.

After setting off for a short while, you’ll be arriving at the highest point on the A83 – an amazing lookout point overlooking Glen Croe aptly named “Rest and Be Thankful”. You’ll want to stop over for a quick stretch of your legs and a commemorative photo!

The next pit stop is for lunch at a local favourite restaurant! The Loch Fyne Restaurant & Oyster Bar is famous for serving up fabulous seafood from the loch, and not to mention an amazing wine and whiskey list.

And before you know it, you’ll arrive at Inveraray, your destination for the night!

While there’s still plenty of daylight, don’t forget to check out Inveraray’s famous historical sites! There’s the Inveraray Jail tour for those fascinated by tales of prison life from the olden days. Prefer fairy tales instead? Opt for a tour of Inveraray Castle, a real-life castle with beautiful grounds, that is also a film location for Downtown Abbey!

At night, head over to the close by Argyll Caravan Park located along the shores of Loch Fyne.

Day 3:

Ready yourself for a day of adventure as you embark towards Easdale Island (a short hour ride away) for an exhilarating Seafari Adventure nature and wildlife boat tour!

Our favourite tour? A 3-hour Wildlife and Whale spotting tour! What better way to immerse in nature than by observing them in their natural habitats? From seabirds, deers, dolphins, seals, otters, and even majestic whales and more, there’s plenty of wildlife that can be sighted on this tour!

Feeling hungry after a day of wildlife adventure? Head quickly into the neighbouring seatown of Oban to indulge in fresh seafood while admiring the stunning views from the harbour. Check out the Waterfront Fishouse Restaurant an informal seafood place by the bay.

Spend the rest of the day exploring the town of Oban at a leisurely pace. Don’t forget to drop by the Oban Chocolate Company where you can buy or even make your very own local chocolate, stroll through the beautiful Arduaine Garden, or even take a tour of the Oban distillery to learn more about whisky making!

Before the sun sets, head over to the nearby North Ledaig Caravan Park with spectacular sea views to get some rest for the night!

Day 4:

On the last day of the road trip, you’ll be bidding farewell to the coastal town of Oban as you head further inland to Fort William, towards the mountainous regions that Scotland is well known for.

Depending on your interest to scale the highest mountain in the UK, Ben Nevis, you may need to extend your itinerary by a day or two, as the average time for a round trip to the summit is approximately 7-9 hours.

Alternatively, you can always visit the famous Ben Nevis Distillery to pick up a whisky to bring home or check out the “Hogwarts Express Bridge” for a breath-taking view of the world’s most beautiful railway.

Either way, you’ll be a short 2.5 hour away from the drop-off point for your motorhome in Glasgow.
